More ethnicities of all national types are asking for rhinoplasty surgery to better fit their faces better but within the general characteristics of the person’s race or national origin.
For instance, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) estimates that 24 percent of the 1.6 million cosmetic plastic surgeries performed in 2011 (the most current year for which statistics exist) were ethnic patients. Of those 384,000 plastic surgery patients, six percent — or 96,000 — were on people of African-American background.
Rhinoplasty on any ethnicity requires the plastic surgeon to have special knowledge and experience about ethnic characteristics.
Black patients want to look better with a nose that fits their — and only their — face. Creating a larger, more angular and pointy Anglo nose on a black patient would not look anywhere near natural.
A more common request for both black male and female rhinoplasty patients is avoiding any type of rejuvenation surgery that even remotely approaches the hugely overdone, over-operated nose of the late rocker Michel Jackson.
When it comes to nose jobs on black patients, a many ask for a narrower nasal bridge. Many also want to refine the tip of the nose while even more want to narrow their nostrils — but only slightly, so that they still show the nostril’s natural curve that fits a black face.
Even skin must be considered. The general rule is, the darker the skin, the thicker the skin. So some black patients will have their nasal skin defatted and slimmed to better reveal the careful work that went into creating a better nasal framework.
Nostril narrowing on an African-American nose requires the delicate touch of a master surgeon. If the nose is narrowed just slightly too much, it starts to resemble an Anglo nose. Top rhinoplasty surgeons work on the inside of the nose so no outside scars are found.
